That is not how I have lived
That is not how I am living now
I know It’s right to start living like
I am part of the Planet

In our culture living like we are part of the planet is difficult. Our industrial economy churns along growing as fast as we can force it. Our pollution of the atmosphere with greenhouse gases holds the history of our industrial revolution as a biological debt above our heads. To realize the size and implications of the existence this debt is overwhelming. Our unwise use of water and soil undermines the health and abundance of both. In our culture if you start to live like you are part of the planet you are viewed by many as suspect, foolish, naive, subversive, even revolutionary.

I have been strongly influenced by the culture I have grown up in and that is one of the reasons I have had a hard time living like I am part of the planet. I have been convinced that I need to live in a way that reflects the reality of my in inseparability from nature, and the truth of my biological existence, but have been slow to change my way of living to reflect my own conclusions. My reasoning ability, desire to change, and application of my will, have not been as effective as I think they should have been.

I think I need more support to counter the pervasive effects of the mass market culture I live in. Three additional supports come to mind. One is to add story and affirmation to the subjective side of my desire to change. To affirm simple directives, eat like I’m part of the Planet, move like I’m part of the Planet… could help engage my subjective side more completely by bringing in the artistic and spiritual part of my brain into the fight. Getting involved with other people who are changing how they live would provide some social support I feel is missing in my life. Spending more time interacting directly with nature would also be a good reinforcement of my desire to change, gardening, hiking, picnics, running on dirt and grass as opposed to asphalt.

All of these things take time, time seems to be getting short in many ways. Given my time constraints, for now, I affirm to become more, like I am part of the Planet. I will contemplate these affirmations each day and choose a focus for practical application of living like I am part of the planet. I want to start with food. I want to start eating like I’m part of the planet and will let that idea, or story, carry me into a mythic journey.
